Next up, Aamir Khan on The Great Indian Kapil Show Episode 5! When that is the single significant takeaway from Episode 4, you know where this piece is going.
Following the LOL moments of the third episode featuring Diljit Dosanjh, Parineeti Chopra and Imtiaz Ali, expectations around Kapil Sharma’s Netflix extravaganza, The Great Indian Kapil Show, were high.
This time around, the stage was set for the Kaushal brothers — Vicky and Sunny. And while it did have its moments of fun, this too — much like the first couple of episodes — went flat just when you were expecting it to fizz.
The laughter spotlight, yet again, was on Sunil Grover, from lost wife at the airport to hard-hat engineer, as the fourth episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show fell back on the format – but not quite the form – of Kapil’s television series.
The reunion of Kapil Sharma and Sunil Grover after six years for a comedy sketch at the start and then during the conversation on the couch was like watching a ping-pong match, each trying to outwit the other with improvised lines. At one point, when a witty remark from Vicky Kaushal threw the script for a toss, Grover came to the rescue. Breaking away from character, he looked at Kapil and complained, “he has ruined the whole script”.
Krushna Abhishek, who appeared as desperate airhostess Mona, managed a few rib-tickling one-liners, specially one about Vicky and Sunny’s fight-master father Sham Kaushal.
However, characters like Chef Dhaniya Lal, portrayed by Kiku Sharda, and the unnamed attendant, by Rajiv Thakur, lacked punchlines and panache, functioning as mere space fillers.
Most importantly, the talk show portion of the evening fizzled out despite Vicky’s endearing laughter and the easy banter between the brothers. No juicy anecdotes here that Kapil’s fans crave like from a Bollywood gossip column.
Okay, now that we have got the customary blah-blah out of the way, let’s go back to the future. Popcorn alert: Aamir Khan will be making his first ever appearance on any Kapil Sharma show in Episode 5. ‘Dil chahta hai’, a comedy ‘dangal’ this weekend!
