The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has shared a video clip of Deepika Padukone’s performance in the song Deewani Mastani from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2015 period drama Bajirao Mastani, prompting a reaction from her husband Ranveer Singh who starred in the film alongside Deepika and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

“Deepika Padukone performing ‘Deewani Mastani’ (sung by Shreya Ghoshal) from the movie ‘Bajirao Mastani,’” The Academy wrote alongside the video, giving a shoutout to Shreya Ghoshal who has lent her voice to the song. “Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra Jonas,” they added, mentioning the star cast and the director.

“Mesmeric,” Ranveer, who played the titular Bajirao in the film, wrote in the comments section.

In the video, Deepika wears a stunning golden Anarkali adorned with intricate embroidery, mirroring the grandeur of the Mughal era. The actress, who played the warrior princess Mastani, gracefully showcases her dance moves in front of the heroic Peshwa Bajirao, played by Ranveer.

Composed by Bhansali, Deewani Mastani is penned by Siddharth-Garima.

The comments section was also flooded with comments from Indian fans beaming with pride. “Now The Academy (is) finally giving the recognition that Bollywood deserves,” one of them wrote. “Thank you for recognising the most beautifully shot song of all time,” another fan commented.

Bajirao Mastani revolves around Peshwa Bajirao who falls in love with Mastani despite being married to Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra). Thus begins an epic love story as their forbidden romance faces societal opposition, political intrigue and personal sacrifice.

Deepika and Ranveer started dating each other on the sets of the 2013 film Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, also helmed by Bhansali. They tied the knot on November 14, 2018 at Lake Como in Italy. The couple are awaiting the birth of their first child in September this year.

In last year’s Oscars ceremony, Deepika presented RRR’s Naatu Naatu song, which went on to bag the best song award at the 95th Academy Awards.

After sharing screen space with Shah Rukh Khan in 2023’s Pathaan and Jawan, Deepika appeared in Siddharth Anand’s Fighter alongside Hrithik Roshan. She is set to appear alongside Ranveer in Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again, slated to release on August 15.
