A group of friends — played by Adarsh Gourav, Vineet Kumar Singh and Shashank Arora — embark on a journey to tell the story of their village Malegaon through a film made with limited resources in the trailer of Superboys of Malegaon, dropped by the makers on Friday.

The two-minute-30-second-long trailer shows lighthearted moments shared by the friends as they navigate the joys and challenges of creating the film. Celebrating the power of friendship, dreams and perseverance, the trailer begins with Adarsh’s Nasir sharing his vision of filmmaking with his friends who break it to him that they are not financially secure to invest in a film.

Despite being penniless, Nasir dares to dream of depicting the joys and laughter of Malegaon, a village which is often fraught with communal tensions and poverty. The trailer shows Nasir and his friends, who go on to become amateur filmmakers, conducting auditions of villagers for the movie.

Nasir’s dream also includes being financially stable and asking for the hand of his love interest, played by Manjiri Pupala, from her father before she is married off to another man.

The trailer also shows scenes of police disrupting their shoot and the villagers celebrating the film after the makers screen it in their village. It culminates with a touching scene of Shashank Arora holding a child in his arms, gazing up at an aeroplane in the sky. With optimism, he tells the child, “One day, I’ll fly in it.”

Superboys of Malegaon, a film based on the life of amateur filmmaker Nasir Sheikh, is set to make its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 13. It will also be screened at the BFI London Film Festival on October 10. The film is slated to hit theatres in January 2025, followed by its arrival on Prime Video.

Directed by Reema Kagti and written by Varun Grover, Superboys of Malegaon is inspired by Faiza Ahmad Khan’s award winning documentary Supermen of Malegaon.
