With a number of Bollywood classics re-releasing on the big screen in 2024, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur on Wednesday took to social media and asked fans if the 1987 classic Mr. India starring Anil Kapoor and Sridevi should be released again in theatres.

“I have a question for the fans of Mr India .. how many of you have seen it on the big screen? And how many on the small screen .. is it time to re-release Mr India on the big screen like other classics are,” Kapur posted on X.

Kapur’s tweet received immediate response from fans and celebrities. “I have seen Mr India on both big and small screen. The answer is yes, yes, yes,” Pritish Nandy replied.

“I saw on big and small screen :-) yes. Remastered version needs to be on the big screen. The effects also still holds good in today's times. Same with the edit, etc. Timeless,” Ricky Kej wrote.

Filmmaker Rahul Dholakia suggested organising a Shekhar Kapur retrospective. “Absolutely!! One of the most entertaining films of the time! We need to see a Shekhar Kapur retrospective- masoom, Mr. India, bandit & Elizabeth,” he said.

“I have seen it on the big screen and I would love to see it re-release again on the big screen. ,” Aftab Shivdasani tweeted.

Meanwhile, Boney Kapoor took to social media on Wednesday to share a nostalgic picture from the sets of Mr. India, taken a day before filming commenced.

The photo includes Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, Boney Kapoor, and Shekhar Kapur. In the caption, Boney Kapoor wrote, “January 5th 1985 Just before the first day shoot Mr India.”

Mr. India was written by Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. Produced by Boney Kapoor, the film starred Anil Kapoor as a man running an orphanage who stumbles upon a watch that grants him invisibility. Sridevi portrayed the role of a journalist in the film.

The cast also included Amrish Puri as the iconic Mogambo, Satish Kaushik as Calendar, Harish Patel as Roopchand, and Annu Kapoor as Editor Gaitonde.

2024 has been a year of re-releases. From a Shah Rukh Khan film festival in February — which included screenings of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Mohabbatein (2000) and Chak De India (2007) — to Ranbir Kapoor’s Rockstar (2011) and the most-recent re-release of Laila Majnu (2018), audiences have been flocking to theatres to revisit the old classics.

Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), Gautham Vasudev Menon’s Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein (2001) and Rahi Anil Barve’s Tumbbad (2018) are also hitting cinemas again this Friday.
