“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease. The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace,” American entertainment magazine Variety quoted her publicist Leslie Sloane as having said.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Doherty moved to Los Angeles with her family as a child and began her acting career at age 10 with a role on Father Murphy. She was Jenny Wilder in Little House on the Prairie when she was 11. Doherty later had a recurring role on the family series Our House.

Her breakthrough came in the 1990s when she starred as Brenda Walsh on Fox’s Beverly Hills, 90210. Alongside her twin brother Brandon, played by Jason Priestley, Brenda was part of the Walsh family, who had recently moved from Minnesota to Beverly Hills.

Doherty reprised her role as Brenda in the 2008 revival of 90210 for one season and returned again for the 2019 series BH90210.

Doherty also starred in Charmed, a supernatural drama about three sisters who discover they are witches and must unite to combat evil forces. She also directed three episodes of the series: Be Careful What You Witch For, The Good, The Bad, and The Cursed, and All Hell Breaks Loose, the latter marking her final appearance on the show as her character was killed off at the end of the third season.

Doherty’s film career included roles in the teen classic Heathers, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, and Kevin Smith’s films Mallrats and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
