Sony Pictures Classics on Monday dropped the official trailer for Saoirse Ronan-starrer The Outrun, slated to release on October 4, the same date on which Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker: Folie à Deux will arrive in theatres.

Helmed by Nora Fingscheidt, The Outrun premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in January and was also screened at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival in February. It is adapted from Amy Liptrop’s acclaimed 2015 memoir and delves into the life of a recovering addict.

The two-minute-10-second long trailer revolves around 29-year-old Rona (Ronan) who navigates the precarious path between sobriety and relapse into alcoholism. It shows her returning to her family in the Orkney Islands after spending a decade in London.

The trailer depicts Rona seeking support from her family after rehab. She struggles to stay sober while grappling with memories of her past.

“Sometimes you can feel a vibration in Orkney, a low rumble that takes over the whole island and every part of your body,” Rona says at the beginning of the trailer. “But there is only so much height any wave can sustain before it comes crashing down… It never gets easy, it just gets less hard,” she adds, highlighting the challenges of staying sober.

Alongside Ronan, The Outrun features Paapa Essiedu, Stephen Dillane and Saskia Reeves. Director Nora Fingscheidt has co-written the screenplay with Amy Liptrot.
