Netflix has unveiled Cillian Murphy’s first look as aged Tommy Shelby from the new Peaky Blinders movie, which is currently in production.
“By order of the Peaky Blinders... Tommy Shelby is back. Cillian Murphy and Steven Knight are reunited on set as production officially starts on the upcoming Netflix film,” wrote the streaming platform on X, dropping a picture of Murphy as the gangster from Birmingham.
Another picture dropped by the streamer shows the Oscar-winning actor sharing a moment with Steven Knight, the creator of the six-season BBC drama series.
Set in Birmingham, the original Peaky Blinders series follows the exploits of a crime gang in the aftermath of the First World War. The fictional gang is loosely based on a real urban youth gang that was active in the city from the 1880s to the 1920s.
The first season of Peaky Blinders aired on BBC Two on September 12, 2013, and moved to BBC One for its fifth and sixth seasons.
Netflix eventually acquired the rights to release the show in the US and around the world. The last season was released in 2022.
The upcoming Peaky Blinders film, set during World War II, will be a continuation of the series. Tom Harper, who directed episodes of the show’s first season, will direct the new film from a script by Knight.
“It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders,” Murphy told Tudum, Netflix’s companion site.”
Also starring Rebecca Ferguson, Barry Keoghan and Tim Roth, the film was first announced in June. “Tommy Shelby returns. A PEAKY BLINDERS FILM starring Cillian Murphy is coming to Netflix,” wrote the streaming platform, sharing a picture of the script on Instagram.
Harper heaped praise on the cast and crew of the series. “When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive,” he said.
“We’re grateful to the fans for getting us to this point and believe this next chapter is going to deliver something extraordinary,” he added.
Expressing his excitement about the upcoming film, Knight told Tudum, “It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”
Knight is co-producing the Peaky Blinders film alongside Murphy, Caryn Mandabach and Guy Heeley. Executive producers include Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren and David Mason.
More details about the movie’s release date and cast have been kept under wraps.
