The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday announced the shortlists in 10 categories for the upcoming 96th Oscars ceremony.
These categories include Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound and Visual Effects.
Greta Gerwig’s neon comedy Barbie emerged as a significant frontrunner, securing mentions in five categories. The Margot Robbie-starrer’s standout entries include recognition for original song, featuring submissions from musical heavyweights Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.
Barbie's original score and sound also earned a nod. However, despite its dominant presence, Barbie faced an unexpected setback in the makeup and hairstyling category, leaving many surprised.
Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon also made a strong showing with four nods, including one in the original song category. Another noteworthy contender is J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow, drawing parallels to last year's unexpected success All Quiet on the Western Front, which went on to secure four Oscars.
Nominations voting for the prestigious awards ceremony is set to commence on January 11 and will continue till January 16. The final list of nominations will be unveiled on January 23.
The 96th Oscars ceremony is scheduled to take place on March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
