Focus Features has dropped a fresh trailer for Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, offering a haunting preview of the third adaptation of the renowned vampire tale, which follows F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film and Werner Herzog’s 1979 remake.

Eggers’ Nosferatu reimagines Murnau’s classic, with Bill Skarsgård portraying Count Orlok, the role first made famous by Max Schreck. While the trailer refrains from fully revealing Skarsgård’s transformation into a vampire, brief glimpses of his shadowed figure and clawed hands convey a sense of dread.

Dropped by the makers on Monday, the trailer focuses on Thomas and Ellen Hutter, played by Nicholas Hoult and Lily-Rose Depp respectively, as they become entangled in Orlok’s sinister machinations. Ellen, who has long been troubled by mysterious visions and spells, finds herself the object of Orlok’s fancy. Tension builds up as Ellen is torn between resisting his dark influence and succumbing to the terror.

IMDb describes Nosferatu as “a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake”.

Also starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, Emma Corrin, Simon McBurney and Ralph Ineson, Nosferatu is scheduled for release in US theaters on December 25.
