Baby Yoda, also known as Grogu, will feature in a new Star Wars movie alongside The Mandalorian, the official page of the science fiction film series announced on Tuesday.

Filmmaker John Favreau, who helmed Disney+ live-action series The Mandalorian in 2019, will direct and produce the new movie titled The Mandalorian and Grogu. Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni and president of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy will also be associated with the project whose production will begin later this year.

“The Mandalorian and Grogu are headed to the big screen. Directed by Jon Favreau, and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, and Dave Filoni, The Mandalorian & Grogu will go into production later this year,” the Star Wars franchise wrote on its official X handle.

Favreau said he had loved telling stories set in the rich world created by George Lucas. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting,” he added.

Favreau’s Disney+ series The Mandalorian, a new addition to the Star Wars movie franchise since the 2019 film The Rise of Skywalker, follows the tale of a bounty hunter (played by Pedro Pascal), who takes the responsibility of protecting a young alien called Grogu. Having run for three seasons, the series is currently in the works for a fourth season.

The Mandalorian and Grogu will lead Lucasfilm’s upcoming feature-development slate, which includes films directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold and Dave Filoni.
