Actress Nayanthara has apologised for “inadvertently hurting” sentiments, after her film Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food was removed from Netflix amidst a controversy.
On Thursday, the Jawan actress shared a note in English, Hindi and Tamil on Instagram, pointing out that the idea behind Annapoorani was to inspire resilience and instil the spirit of never giving up.
Directed by Nilesh Krishnaa, Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food chronicles the journey of a young woman aspiring to be a chef in the face of stiff opposition from her conservative Brahmin family.
After releasing theatrically on December 1 last year, Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food made its OTT debut on Netflix on December 29. However, it was soon removed when a flurry of complaints landed in the streamer’s Indian office, accusing the family drama of hurting sentiments.
“I am writing this with a heavy heart and a genuine desire to address the recent turn of events concerning our film ‘Annapoorani’,” the 39-year-old actress began her note before elaborating on how the film was aimed to mirror life’s journey.
“Crafting Annapoorani was not just a cinematic endeavor but a heartfelt pursuit of inspiring resilience and instilling the spirit of never giving up. It aimed to mirror life’s experience, where we learnt that obstacles can be overcome with sheer willpower,” she wrote.
Nayanthara underlined that the removal of a film from the OTT platform came as a surprise. “We did not expect the removal of a censored film, previously showcased in theatres from the OTT platform,” wrote the Jawan actress.
The actress also reflected on her time in the film industry and how she has always given priority to spreading positivity and learning through movies. “Over the last two decades, my journey in the film industry has been guided with a singular intention – To spread positivity and foster learning from one another,” she said.
