Prime Video on Tuesday dropped the official trailer of its new series My Lady Jane, a Tudor-era fantasy filled with action, adventure, comedy and romance, with the announcement that it will premiere on the streamer on June 27.
Based on a best-selling book by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows, the eight-episode series reimagines the tragic life of Lady Jane Grey, who became the queen of England for only nine days before Mary Tudor replaced her on the throne.
The two-minute-42-second-long trailer opens with a monologue. “History remembers Jane as the ultimate damsel in distress known for her death rather than her life. F**k that, what if history were different?” the monologue says, hinting at a thorough reimagining of British history during the Tudor era.
Newcomer Emily Bader takes on the lead role of Jane Grey, while Edward Bluemel plays her lover-turned-husband Lord Guildford Dudley and Jordan Peters portrays the role of King Edward. Other cast members include Anna Chancellor, Rob Brydon, Dominic Cooper and James Broadbent.
The trailer goes on to show how Lady Grey defies a corrupt monarch scheming against her claim to the crown. Her life takes a wild turn when she meets Lord Guildford Dudley and together they go on amorous adventures.
This retelling of English royal history, slated to stream in 240 countries, imagines a world where King Henry VIII's son Edward survives tuberculosis, Lady Jane Grey avoids execution after nine days of being throned and her husband Guildford is also spared.
Historically, Lady Grey, the great-granddaughter of King Henry VII, was proclaimed queen following the death of her first cousin King Edward VI. However, support quickly shifted to Edward's half-sister Mary Tudor, leading to Jane's imprisonment in the Tower of London, her conviction for treason and eventual execution.
