Francesca Sloane and Donald Glover-created spy series Mr. & Mrs. Smith has been renewed for a second season, streaming platform Amazon Prime Video announced on Tuesday, alongside a cryptic video featuring the lead actors Donald Glover and Maya Erskine on social media.
“Season 2... are you in?” the streamer captioned its post on Instagram.
The teaser shows Erskine’s character Jane Smith counting down to three, while Glover’s John Smith, closes his eyes in visible anguish. A shot of the building shows lights flashing through the windows.
A reimagining of the 2005 action-comedy film of the same name starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, Mr. & Mrs. Smith revolves around two spies (John and Jane) who agree to an arranged marriage. The couple navigate missions as their espionage skills and evolving relationship are put to the test.
The first season ended with John and Jane being instructed to terminate each other, leading to a dramatic showdown. The duo fight to the point of exhaustion. John ultimately prevails and injects them both with truth serum. In their delirium, they confess their feelings and reveal personal secrets, realising they were not responsible for the earlier attacks on their lives. Having mortally wounded one of their assailants, Jane and John retreat to a safe room where Jane agrees to have kids and reveals that her real name is Alana. Outside the building, three shots are seen fired.
According to a report in US entertainment magazine Variety, Glover and Erskine would not be featured in a second season. Instead, the show would feature a new couple in Season 2 who take up the names Jane and John Smith, just as Glover and Erskine’s characters did at the beginning of the series.
All eight episodes of the first season premiered on Prime Video on February 2. The second season of the series will reportedly premiere on the streamer in 2025.
