Cherukuri Ramoji Rao, the head of Telugu news and entertainment network ETV and the man behind Ramoji Film City in Telangana, passed away at 87 in Hyderabad on Saturday morning after a prolonged illness.
According to ETV Telangana, a channel under the Ramoji Group, Rao had been undergoing treatment for several days and passed away at 4:50am.
Rao, a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, is renowned as the founder of the Ramoji Group, which owns a prominent integrated production facility in Telangana’s capital. His body has been moved to his residence in Film City.
Born on November 16, 1936, Rao founded Eenadu, a leading Telugu-language daily newspaper, in 1974. He also produced 50 films and telefilms throughout his career.
Rao, primarily known for his contributions to Telugu media, also made significant inroads into the Bengali film industry. Through his extensive production capabilities at Ramoji Film City, Rao supported cross-cultural collaborations. He had produced the 2003 Feluda film Bombaiyer Bomebete helmed by Sandip Ray.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sadness at the news of Rao’s death. “The passing away of Shri Ramoji Rao Garu is extremely saddening. He was a visionary who revolutionized Indian media. His rich contributions have left an indelible mark on journalism and the world of films. Through his noteworthy efforts, he set new standards for innovation and excellence in the media and entertainment world,” he said in a statement.
Telangana chief minister Revanth Reddy also expressed grief at the passing of Rao. “The death of eminent industrialist and Padma Vibhushan awardee Cherukuri Ramoji Rao has caused a great shock. He is credited with adding credibility to Telugu journalism and adding value to the Telugu industrial sector. Without Ramoji Rao, the Telugu press and media sector will never be able to fill the gap. Praying to God to rest his soul in peace... My deepest condolences to the family members,” he posted on X.
