Lady Gaga will not perform her best original song nominee Hold My Hand from Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick at the 95th annual Academy Awards on March 13, confirms Oscars executive producer and showrunner Glenn Weiss.
During a creative team press conference on March 8, Weiss clarified that the singer-turned-actress was currently shooting for a film. “We invited all five nominees to perform on the Oscars night. We have a great relationship with Lady Gaga and her camp. She is in the middle of shooting a movie right now. It didn’t feel like she could get a performance to the calibre that we’re used to with her and that she is used to. So, she is not going to perform on the show”, he said.
Apart from Lady Gaga, all other nominees for best original song will perform live at the ceremony. These songs include Rihanna’s Lift Me Up, Sofia Carson and Diane Warren’s Applause, Stephanie Hsu, David Byrne and Son Lux’s This Is a Life and Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava’s Naatu Naatu.
Lady Gaga is currently filming for Todd Phillips’s Joker: Folie à Deux opposite Joaquin Phoenix. The Bad Romance singer is reportedly playing a new version of the popular DC Comics character Harley Quinn, a psychiatrist who finds herself smitten by the Joker before taking on his villainous ways. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on October 9, 2024 — five years to the day after the release of Joker.
The multiple Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter made her film debut in 2013 with Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills. In 2019, she received her first best actress Oscar nomination for her performance in Bradly Cooper’s A Star Is Born. She received her first Oscar for her contributions to the film’s soundtrack, especially the chart-topping single Shallow, made her the first woman to win an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award and Grammy Award in one year.
