Ranveer and Deepika's 2018 wedding at Lake Como, Italy, was a fairytale affair. Five years later, the couple decided to share their wedding video publicly for the first time on Koffee With Karan. The video captured the beautiful moments of their wedding and left not only the viewers but also host Karan Johar overwhelmed with emotion.

Karan, known for his wit and humour, was left teary-eyed after watching the video. “I am not in a relationship. I’m single. It (the video) kinda makes me realise what I’m losing out on not being in one. You don’t have a partner to share the nothings of your day. Every day I wake up and a part of me feels that vacuum,” he said.

Ranveer's love at first sight

Ranveer revealed that he fell in love with Deepika at first sight during a reading session for the film Ram Leela. Ranveer recalled that Deepika arrived at filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s house in a white chikankari kurta and her hair blowing in the wind, leaving Ranveer mesmerised.

Deepika, on her part, mentioned how she always felt drawn back to Ranveer despite dating other people. “I was single at that time as I had come out of a couple of difficult relationships. I was in a phase when I did not want to be attached or be committed. I just wanted to have fun. And then he comes along. Until he proposed to me, there was no commitment as such. Even if we were technically allowed to see other people, we would keep coming back to each other,” Deepika said.

A dreamy proposal in Maldives

In 2015, Ranveer proposed to Deepika during a vacation in Maldives. The proposal took place on a boat in the middle of the ocean, where they found themselves on a tiny sliver of sand, surrounded by the blue water. It was in this romantic setting that Ranveer asked the question, and Deepika, overwhelmed with emotions, said yes, the couple revealed.

The real challenge came when they had to share the news with Deepika's family in Bangalore. Deepika blurted out the engagement news in front of her close friends, which didn't go as planned. Deepika's mother initially had reservations, but with Ranveer's effort and love, she has grown fond of him, the actress said.

The challenges of marriage

Deepika Padukone candidly opened up about the challenges of marriage, emphasising the need for constant effort and communication. She admitted that she and Ranveer go through difficult patches like any other couple, but they work through them together. Being in the public eye adds an extra layer of complexity to their relationship, but the couple is committed to making it work.

Deepika revealed that they spend their Saturday nights exchanging playlists and dancing until 4am. Ranveer's ability to keep her inner child alive is one of the many joys they find in their marriage.

“If anyone is under the impression that in marriages you wake up every morning and the sun is shining, and someone says, ‘Hey baby, your coffee is ready’, that’s not what marriage is. Sure, you might have certain days that are like that, but marriage is work. And the work is what makes it beautiful,” the actress added.

Deepika and Karan open up about their mental health challenges

The episode took a more serious turn when Deepika talked about her struggles with mental health, mentioning that she has been on medication since 2014. She also highlighted how Ranveer has evolved into a supportive caregiver. “What he (Ranveer) did at that point was that he created a safe space for me to open up. Not once did he say, 'It's okay, forget it', or 'just let's go on a drive' or anything of that sort. At that point, he didn't understand it much, today he understands it a lot better. But he was just all there. He has been so patient. It told me a lot about the person that he is,” Deepika said.

Karan Johar then spoke about his own recent mental breakdown, which occurred during the launch of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre. He recounted a blackout episode, and it was Varun Dhawan who noticed his distress and took him to a quiet room away from the spotlight.

Ranveer also opened about how the string of flops at the box office post pandemic affected him. “Coming out of the pandemic, we had this lovely film 83 which everybody loved. It just released at the wrong time. Forty-eight hours before the release, we lost key markets because they all shut down due to Omicron. Unfortunately, a lovely film had the stigma of being a commercial underperformer,” he said.
