Episode 4 of Koffee With Karan Season 8 featured host Karan Johar’s “spirit soulmate” Kareena Kapoor Khan whom he emulates, and his “first-born” Alia Bhatt whom he over-appreciates. While Alia gushed about daughter Raha and husband Ranbir Kapoor’s performance as a dad, Kareena delivered her trademark quips with her famous raised-brow-mischievous-smile and made it worth a weeknight binge. Here are the highlights.

Raha looks like the Kapoors

Alia shared glimpses of her life as a one-year-old’s mom — how she, like any new mom, shows her daughter Raha’s photos on her phone to people; or asks the little one to point at mum and dad and is overjoyed when she gets it right. Kareena chipped in that Raha looks like Ranbir Kapoor. “It’s a Kapoor thing; they want all their babies to look like them,” laughed Karan. Alia thought that Raha was the right balance of Ranbir and her, and that she looked a lot like Ranbir’s dad, the late Rishi Kapoor.

Ranbir is a hands-on dad

Karan commented that Ranbir Kapoor was “beautifully obsessed” with his daughter and that it would be “the most pleasurable thing” if he could be with her at home, with no films for a year. Alia added that Ranbir is Raha’s burp specialist who can do almost everything. When Alia said that she and Ranbir fought over everything that had to do with their baby, Kareena, in her inimitable style, suggested that they could have another baby instead of fighting.

Ranbir Kapoor’s advice for Alia

Accused of talking too much about her husband, Alia felt that her candid style of speaking is often taken out of context. For instance, Ranbir was labelled a ‘toxic’ husband when Alia shared in a video that Ranbir would ask her to wipe off her lipstick as he preferred the natural colour of her lips. She admitted that her team was anxious about it as Ranbir was “genuinely the opposite”. Karan nodded while one wondered if his show hadn’t contributed to the creation of this image of Ranbir Kapoor.

Alia also shared that Ranbir seeks advice from her and handles both failure and success quite well. The one piece of advice that Ranbir gave Alia is that the audience owns her, so they can say anything about her; if her films are doing well and she can stay in Bandra, she should keep her mouth shut.

Taimur is like dad Saif Ali Khan, Jeh is like mom Kareena

Kareena talked about how Saif Ali Khan got more time to be with Taimur than with his older children Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan when they were small as he was busy building his career. Kareena shared that Taimur is a lot quieter, just like Saif, while Jeh is more of a “Toofan Mail” like herself. Karan, who believes in “legacy friendship”, added that his twin kids — Yash and Roohi — practise taekwondo with Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra’s daughter Adira, and that Yash, who is in the same class with Taimur, has a story to tell about him every day.

Paparazzi mania

Talking about celebrities who desperately try to shield their kid’s face from the paparazzi, Kareena maintained what Saif had advised her early on — that the more they tried to hide from the paparazzi, the greater the impact it would have on them. Alia, who’s not comfortable with her daughter’s image going around on social media, said, “I don’t want her to be a content piece on Instagram.”

Kareena’s long acting stint

Looking back at her long career, Kareena said she was hopefully “acting it right”. Alia, who claimed to be her “biggest fan”, said that Kareena’s energy and ability to not take herself seriously were her unique qualities. Karan recalled a phase when Kareena was “stressed and hyper”, especially before the release of Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine. About why she doesn’t watch her own work, Kareena reiterated that she doesn’t want her calm, relaxed and happy self to become so anxious that she starts to judge herself. “I am my director’s actor,” said Kareena. Karan retorted, “You are your own actor. Which director do you listen to?”

Game zone

The Vibe Check game was nothing noteworthy, except that we got to know that Kareena has never done any work for free, that she’s constantly in touch with elder sister Karisma Kapoor, and that Karan Johar is Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra’s go-to person.

In the rapid-fire round, Kareena fared better than her last outing on KWK. On whether she saw Deepika Padukone as competition, the Jab We Met actress replied that this should be Alia’s question for her rapid-fire. An embarrassed Alia said, “No, she’s my senior.” Asked about who could play the modern generation Poo (her character in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham), pat came the reply, “Not applicable”. On who should reprise Geet (Jab We Met), Kareena’s stern answer was, “Geet can’t be done again.” On the other hand, Alia admitted that she adored Priyanka Chopra’s voice, Deepika Padukone’s screen presence and Katrina Kaif's hardworking nature.

Kareena’s catty comments

Alia, who was seen in Gal Gadot-starrer Netflix film Heart of Stone, shared that she had no intentions to leave India for better prospects. When asked if she had any plans to take off for international shores, Kareena replied, “Main meri BEST bus pe hi theek hoon.”

When Alia shared the news of her pregnancy with Karan, the producer-director had pushed back the Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani schedule and kept the film’s leading actor Ranveer Singh in the loop. “Nursery spreader,” Kareena quipped, “So that he can have a child?”

Kareena observed that Alia was “boring” at parties, and that Karan was a “wannabe GenZ” in the last season of KWK. “You were losing it. You got carried away,” she added.
