Tomato ketchup, eyepatches and nods to memorable movies promise a rollicking crime thriller in Abhishek Chaubey’s Killer Soup trailer, where Manoj Bajpayee plays a double role and Konkona Sen Sharma turns up as an unlikely killer.

Dropped by Netflix on Wednesday, the two-minute-22-second-long trailer shows Konkona’s Swathi’s special soup killing a person, landing herself and her lover Umesh (Manoj) in danger. Swathi, who has been planning to leave her husband for Umesh, tries her best to cover up the murder. But things go awry when a determined police officer named Hasaan goes after the couple in a cat-and-mouse chase.

Full of comedy bursts and thrill, the trailer offers a narrative that seems to have woven hilarity with visuals reminiscent of the noir genre. After showing a few montages of how Umesh and Swathi handle cops and mobsters, the video shows Konkona asking Manoj about the quality of her soup. “Killer,” comes the reply, ending the video and highlighting the title of the series.

Mentioning that the story is “very very loosely based on real headlines”, the video also offers nods to recent hits like Jawan and yesteryear movies like Mr. and Mrs. Iyer. When Konkona and Manoj share a frame at the beginning of the trailer, the latter’s eyepatch looks like Shah Rukh Khan’s mask that the Bollywood hero had sported during one of his daring heists in the Atlee-helmed movie.

Similarly, the scene in which Konkona tells Manoj that they will be Mrs Shetty and Mr Shetty together, it takes us back to Aparna Sen-helmed 2002 movie Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, where Rahul Bose had to act as Konkona’s husband under an assumed identity to save themselves from communal rioters.

Produced by Chetana Kowshik and Honey Trehan, Killer Soup also stars Sayaji Shinde, Mohanlal, Anbu Thasan, Kani Kusruti, Anula Navlekar and Nasser. It will be streaming on Netflix from January 11.
