For many cinephiles, the trailer of Suman Ghosh’s Kabuliwala, starring Mithun Chakraborty in the title role, might bring back memories of Tapan Sinha’s iconic 1957 film about the bond between a little girl and a kabuliwala in a bygone Kolkata. Sinha’s film was based on Rabindranath Tagore’s short story.

The trailer of Ghosh’s Kabuliwala shows Mithun in the role of Rahmat, an Afghan man who makes a living selling dry fruits in Kolkata, weaving his way through the streets and lanes of the city. When he meets a little girl named Mini, who calls him her ‘friend’ — played by Anumegha Kahali in Ghosh’s film — a father-daughter bond develops between them, which reminds Rahmat of his own little girl back home.

“By stepping into Rahmat’s shoes in Kabuliwala, I find myself traversing the timeless corridors of Tagore’s narrative. It’s not just a role, it’s a profound connection with a story that transcends eras, reminding us that love is a language understood by the heart regardless of time or borders,” said Mithun.

Ghosh, who had directed Mithun in his 2011 film Nobel Chor, said recreating Kabuliwala has been a “creative journey filled with passion and nostalgia”.

“The film beautifully captures the essence of love that defies time and cultural barriers. This film is not just a recreation, it’s a celebration of Tagore’s enduring legacy,” said Abir Chatterjee, who plays Mini’s father. Sohini Sarkar plays Mini’s mother.

Indraadip Dasgupta has composed the music for the film produced by Jio Studios and SVF Entertainment, which is targeting a Christmas release.

Dev and Paran Bandopadhyay reunite after Tonic

Going by the trailer of Pradhan, it looks like Dev and Paran Bandopadhyay are all set to recreate the screen chemistry they shared in the 2021 film Tonic. Directed by Avijit Sen, Pradhan is a social drama that highlights the values and relationships that make or break a community together.

“I have not played a police inspector like the one in Pradhan before. This character of a police officer is a lot more realistic. He has a different mentality and is approachable. I was very cautious that the film should not look like Byomkesh Bakshi or Bagha Jatin. This film is socially relevant as well,” said Dev, who plays police officer Deepak Pradhan.

The cast of Pradhan includes Soham, Anirban Chakrabarti, Mamata Shankar, Sujan Mukhopadhyay, Biswanath Basu, Ambarish Bhattacharya, Konineeca Banerjee and Soumitrisha Kundu.

“The chemistry between Dev and Paran Bandopadhyay is expected to elevate the cinematic experience in Pradhan. And I am confident that Soham and Anirban Chakrabarti’s performance will leave the audience mesmerised,” said Avijit Sen.

Pradhan is tentatively slated for a December 22 release.
