Writer George R.R. Martin has described House of the Dragon Season 2 as “powerful, emotional and gut-wrenching” after watching a preview of the first two episodes of the show during his trip to London.
"The highlight of the trip had to be the sneak preview that Ryan [Condal] gave me of the first two episodes of ‘House of the Dragon,’ Season 2. Of course, I am hardly objective when talking about anything based on my own work… but I have to say, I thought both episodes were just great. (And they are not even finished yet.) Dark, mind you. Very dark. They may make you cry. Powerful, emotional, gut-wrenching, heart rending. Just the sort of thing I like," Martin wrote in his official blog on December 6.
Preparations for House of the Dragon Season 3 and 4 are also underway, Martin revealed in his blog.
Martin spent two days collaborating with Condal and the writing staff, delving into the potential storylines for the third and fourth seasons of House of the Dragon. Despite the show's official renewal status only extending to Season 2, Martin remains confident in the series' future, asserting that "it is going to take four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do justice to the Dance of the Dragons, from start to finish."
Describing the discussions as lively and productive, Martin acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating, "There is so much ground to cover that I am not sure 20 days would have been enough."
The author, best known for his A Song of Ice and Fire series, which inspired Game of Thrones, expressed his satisfaction with the direction of the series. "What can I say? I was weaned on Shakespeare, and love the tragedies and history plays best of all," Martin added.
One of the highlights of Martin's visit was a tour of the London set of House of the Dragon, an experience he had eagerly awaited and that was initially delayed by the Writers Guild of America strike. Martin was effusive in his praise for the set, particularly the awe-inspiring Red Keep and Dragonstone sets at Leavesden Studios. "HUGE, stunning, and so damned real that I felt as if I had gone through a time portal to medieval Westeros," he exclaimed.
Featuring a star-studded cast, including Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke and Emma D’Arcy, House of the Dragon Season 2 is set to premiere in early summer 2024. The trailer promises a season filled with violent battles, family betrayals, and the iconic dragon fire that has become synonymous with the world of Westeros.
