Actor Hugh Grant’s character traps two young missionaries, played by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East, after they visit his home to share “the Heavenly Father’s plan” in the second trailer of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ upcoming theological horror film Heretic.
Dropped by A24 on Thursday, the one-minute-long trailer offers a closer look at Grant’s dissident, who indulges in sacrilegious rituals. A poster on his wall promotes chaos and a copy of The Book of Mormon lies on the table.
In one scene, Grant’s character pairs the words belief and disbelief on a blackboard. He carves out a wooden figurine and appears menacing as the missionaries ring his doorbell. His isolated villa in the middle of a wood adds to the film’s eerie ambience.
The first trailer of Heretic, dropped by the makers in June, showed Grant’s character holding Thatcher and East hostage in his house after enticing them with the promise of learning about the Church of Jesus Christ and offering them homemade pie.
Heretic had its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. It is yet to get a release date.
Beck and Woods also serve as the producers for Heretic alongside Julia Glausi, Stacey Sher and Jeanette Volturno. The filmmaking duo is known for developing the script of 2018’s hit horror film A Quiet Place. Beck and Woods recently worked on The Boogeyman (2023) and directed Adam Driver in the action film 65 (2023).
Grant last appeared in Kate Winslet’s HBO limited series The Regime. He has Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy in the pipeline. The sequel to Bridget Jones’s Baby and the fourth instalment in the Bridget Jones film series, the romcom will see Grant reprise his role as Daniel Cleaver opposite Renée Zellweger. The film is slated to hit theatres next year.
