Rasika Dugal and her actor husband Mukul Chadda will play a married couple dealing with the presence of a ‘genderless being’ in their lives in Karan Gour’s Fairy Folk, set for a theatrical release on March 1.
Fairy Folk was screened last year at the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, Sydney Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. The film will have a commercial release in Mumbai, Goa, Bangalore, Kolkata and Delhi.
“The creation of Fairy Folk marked a departure from traditional filmmaking methods. I crafted the film from the ground up without a conventional dialogue-driven script — all spoken word would be improvised in that moment. The narrative was shaped by a concise 30-page script, bolstered by a detailed 60-page document outlining the characters’ motivations,” said director Karan Gour, who had earlier made Kshya in 2011 starring Rasika Dugal. .
“This structure provided a clear plot direction while allowing the actors considerable freedom to interpret and portray their characters. The absence of scripted dialogues introduced an element of unpredictability, demanding a high level of adaptability and improvisation from both the cast and crew,” he added.
Fairy Folk talks about the complexities of relationships and explores what happens when ‘a genderless being forces itself into the life of a couple, unleashing a whirlwind of wonder and catastrophe — depending on who you ask,’ says the Instagram post shared by the film’s makers.
The Fairy Folk cast includes Nikhil Desai, Asmit Pathare, Chandrachoor Rai, Ankit Challa and Jahnavi Dave. The background score is by Karan Gour and the cinematography is by Abhinay Khorazi.
