With over 5.5 lakh tickets sold, Shah Rukh Khan's Dunki has already garnered about Rs 15 crore nett for its opening day through advance booking, reports the box-office tracking website Sacnilk.
Dunki is Shah Rukh’s first collaboration with filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, known for delivering massive blockbusters like 3 Idiots, PK and Sanju. Also featuring Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, Vikram Kochhar, Anil Grover and Boman Irani, the comedy drama is expected to collect Rs 30-34 crore nett on Day 1 in India.
While the projected Day 1 collection presents an impressive figure, it falls short of Shah Rukh’s previous two blockbusters released earlier in the year.
Siddharth Anand’s action-packed thriller Pathaan set a record in January with an opening of Rs 57 crore nett (Rs 55 crore nett in Hindi). In September, Shah Rukh surpassed his own benchmark with a massive opening of Rs 75 crore nett (Rs 65.50 crore nett in Hindi) for Atlee’s masala action film Jawan. Both films eventually grossed over Rs 1000 crore worldwide.
However, Dunki faces tough competition at the box office as it clashes with Prabhas’ pan-India actioner Salaar, set to release a day later on December 22. Industry reports suggest that Salaar has garnered superior advance bookings, already selling 13.9 lakh tickets worth Rs 29 crore nett for its opening day.
