For the first time in 2024, two consecutive months crossed the Rs 1,000 crore mark at the box office. After August had become the most successful month of the year, September followed up with a tally of Rs 1,066 crore. Devara: Part 1 led the way in September, with a strong showing from The Greatest of All Time, as per the India Box Office Report by Ormax Media.

With Jr. NTR helming an ensemble cast, Devara: Part 1, which also stars Janhvi Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, romped to Rs 337 crore, making up one-third of the box office collection in September. The Telugu action-drama, written and directed by Koratala Siva, rose to third in the list of highest-grossing films for 2024, behind Kalki 2898 AD (Rs 776 crore) and Stree 2 (Rs 707 crore). In second place for September was The Greatest of All Time, a Tamil action thriller starring Thalapathy Vijay, which roped in Rs 293 crore. A.R.M, a Malayalam action adventure, sealed third place for September, closing out the month with Rs 76 crore.

The fourth and fifth positions on the monthly list were occupied by Kishkindha Kaandam (Rs 49 crore), a Malayalam mystery, and Lubber Pandhu (Rs 46 crore), a Tamil sports drama, respectively. Despite missing out on the top five, Tumbbad enjoyed a memorable September, with its re-release fetching Rs 40 crore, more than twice its original box office amount. This also made Tumbbad, initially released in 2018, the highest-grossing re-release of all time in India.

A solid showing in September means that 2024’s cumulative box office for the first nine months stands at Rs 7,949 crore, which is 9.5 per cent less than the same period last year. At this rate, 2024 is slated to accumulate Rs 10,598 crore, still some way off 2023’s record-breaking haul of Rs 12,226 crore.

In terms of language share for the calendar year, Hindi has dropped off to 37 per cent, followed by Telugu at 21 per cent and Tamil at 15 per cent, respectively.
