Netflix has a busy August lined up as a slew of new movies and web series are set to arrive on the streamer during the second half of this month. Here’s a look.
Depp v Heard
Depp v. Heard, a three-part documentary series directed by Emma Cooper, depicts the Johnny Depp v Amber Heard trial, which made headlines in 2022 after the celebrity couple sued each other for defamation over an op-ed penned by Heard. The series features testimonies from both parties and utilises over 200 hours of live-streamed coverage of the trial in the press as well as social media. It also delves into social media’s impact on the trial, prompting uncomfortable questions about the final verdict being influenced by conversations happening outside the courtroom.

Guns & Gulaabs
Dulquer Salmaan, Gulshan Devaiah, Rajkummar Rao and Adarsh Gourav take on eccentric roles in Raj & DK's action comedy series Guns & Gulaabs. The quartet finds themselves entangled in a complex adventure involving a politician. Salmaan plays a suave and attractive ‘Family Man Arjun’. Gourav portrays ‘Chhota Ganchi’, the incompetent successor to a strongman. Devaiah transforms into ‘4 Cut Atmaram’, a long-haired assassin skilled with a knife, while Rao becomes ‘Panna Tipu’, a romantic mechanic who is meticulous about his accomplishments in the killing field. The show brings these characters together in an entertaining blend that pays homage to the 90s pop culture.

The Monkey King
Anthony Stacchi’s The Monkey King is an animated fantasy actioner which draws inspiration from the Chinese novel Journey to the West. The movie revolves around a trickster Monkey King (Jimmy O. Yang) who joins forces with a young girl (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport) to embark on a grand adventure in search of immortality. Along the way, they confront the formidable Dragon King, played by Bowen Yang.

The Norwegian fantasy series Ragnarok is set to return for a third and final season as Magne (David Stakston) and his companions are gearing up to engage in a grand showdown against Vidal Jutul (Gísli Örn Garðarsson) and Laurits (Jonas Strand Gravli). The conclusion of Season 2 saw Laurits acquiring a pet tapeworm, which is expected to transform into the formidable World Serpent, Jormungandr, a character famed for overcoming Thor in traditional Norse legends.
