Deepika Padukone has praised Bradley Cooper’s portrayal of the late US composer Leonard Bernstein in Maestro as one of the “greatest performances” she has seen in a long time.
Sharing a viral six-minute-long scene from the 2023 biopic, Deepika wrote on her Instagram Story, “Aah this scene! Probably one of the greatest performances I've experienced in recent years.”
Cooper, who plays Bernstein in his second feature after 2018’s A Star is Born, conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in Gustav Mahler’s Resurrection melody in the video, which was originally shared by a cinephile on Instagram. The scene was shot in Ely Cathedral, where Berstein had famously played the symphony in 1973, with a live orchestra, a full choir and an audience.
The actor-filmmaker spent years working with Gustavo Dudamel and Yannick Séguin, music directors of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera respectively, to successfully depict on camera one of the major turning points in Bernstein’s life and career.
Currently streaming on Netflix, Maestro was a huge success at the 80th Venice International Film Festival last year at its premiere. It is also nominated for the Golden Lion award along with four nods at the Golden Globe Awards.
