Actors Cillian Murphy and Jay Lycurgo have wrapped up filming for their upcoming Netflix film Steve, the streamer announced on Wednesday.
“Production wraps this week on STEVE, a new film starring Academy Award® winner Cillian Murphy and Jay Lycurgo,” Netflix UK & Ireland wrote on their official X page, sharing a still featuring Cillian, Lycurgo and Porter from the sets of the film.
Directed by Tim Mielants, Steve is a reimagining of Max Porter’s bestselling novel Shy. Murphy, who previously teamed up with the Belgian filmmaker for the 2013 drama series Peaky Blinders and the 2024 film Small Things Like These, has produced the film along with Alan Moloney under the banner of their production company Big Things Films.
In July 2024, Netflix confirmed that Lycurgo would be starring in Steve alongside Murphy. Lycurgo recently headlined Netflix’s 2022 series The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself. He also featured in the 2018 series Titans and Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
Steve will follow a brief yet intense period in the life of a troubled teenage boy named Shy. As a resident of Last Chance, a home for “very disturbed young men”, Shy decides to escape into the night, haunted by the voices of his teachers, parents, those he has hurt and those trying to love him.
Murphy and Porter previously collaborated on the stage adaptation of the latter’s 2015 novel Grief is the Thing with Feathers and also on the 2021 short film All of This Unreal Time.
Murphy last starred in Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer alongside Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and Gary Oldman. He clinched the best actor award for his leading role in the biopic. The actor is set to return as Tommy Shelby in a new Netflix movie based on the British drama series Peaky Blinders.
