Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer has surpassed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to claim the title of the third highest-grossing film of 2023 with a staggering global collection of USD 854 million, as per Box Office Mojo reports.
Earlier, Marvel’s superhero flick used to hold the record with a lifetime collection of USD 845 million.
Headlined by Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer released in China last week, raking in USD 5.4 million over its first weekend, pushing the film’s global collections upwards. It has collected USD 311 million in the US domestic market and USD 542 million overseas.
The latest milestone in Oppenheimer’s journey comes with a slew of other notable records. The biographical thriller has also overtaken Inception (USD 826 million) as the highest-grossing non-superhero film by Nolan. Additionally, Oppenheimer has claimed the position of the second-highest grossing R-rated film of all time, trailing only behind the 2019 hit Joker, which grossed a staggering USD 1.066 billion worldwide.
Over the past weekend, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which released on the same day as Oppenheimer, officially claimed the title of the biggest movie of 2023, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie (USD 1.35 billion) and amassing USD 1.85 billion globally.
Oppenheimer takes audiences on a gripping journey through history, narrating the story of the Manhattan Project and the intense work that led to the development of the first atomic bomb. Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh and Emily Blunt also feature in the movie in significant roles.
