Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) gradually transition from friends to lovers in the official trailer of Bridgerton Season 3, dropped by streaming platform Netflix on Thursday.

The two-minute-47-second-long trailer opens with a return to familiar scenes of grand balls and promenades, showcasing a passionate romance between Kate (played by Simone Ashley) and Anthony Bridgerton (played by Jonathon Bailey). However, there are intriguing new developments. Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie) appears to be forming a closer bond with Prudence Featherington (Bessie Carter).

Coughlan’s Penelope Featherington decides to let go of her long-standing crush on her childhood friend Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) but remains determined to find love and independence, especially to continue her secret life as the infamous gossip writer Lady Whistledown without the interference of her mother and sisters.

Meanwhile, Colin has returned from his travels and his new sculpted physique is the talk of the town. Penelope, on the other hand, fails to attract a suitor despite her best efforts (and a sparkling wardrobe). This is when Colin steps into the scene to help Penelope as a friend. They enter an agreement to find her a suitable husband. Yet this journey of matchmaking reveals deeper emotions for Colin.

As Penelope gains confidence and catches the eye of Lord Debling (played by Sam Phillips), Colin feels deeply unsettled, questioning his real feelings about his friend. “Mother, do you believe the best foundation for love is friendship?” asks Colin, seeking guidance from his mother Violet Bridgerton (played by Ruth Gemmell).

The trailer concludes with a poignant moment between Penelope and Colin, prompting questions about the driving force behind love — Is it the mind or is it the heart?

The trailer promises the return of many beloved characters including Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel), Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh). It also reveals some new additions — Daniel Francis, Sam Phillips and James Phoon.

The upcoming third instalment of the popular Shondaland series includes eight episodes that are split into two parts. The first four episodes will premiere on Netflix on May 16, while the next four will debut on June 13.

Based on the eponymous eight-book series by Julia Quinn, the first season of the Regency era drama explored the love story between Daphne(Phoebe Dynevor) and her husband Simon, the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page). The next instalment followed an enemies-to-lovers theme, focussing on the budding romance between Viscount Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley).
