Nicole Kidman’s influential CEO Romy enjoys a reversal of power dynamics in her torrid affair with a young intern, Harris Dickinson’s Samuel, in the new trailer for Halina Reijn’s upcoming erotic thriller Babygirl.
Dropped by production house A24 on Tuesday, the one-minute-56-second-long trailer captures Romy exploring her sexual fantasies even as her affair with her employee puts her professional and family life at stake. While Antonio Banderas essays the role of Romy’s husband, Esther McGregor and Vaughan Reilly portray her kids.
Samuel seduces Romy into a passionate affair wherein she relishes being dominated by her partner. Though largely satisfied with her longtime marriage, Romy feels something is missing. “I have never felt anything like this before,” she says, as the trailer offers glimpses of her submitting herself to Samuel, who is decades younger than her.
Meanwhile, Samuel understands perfectly the dynamics of their relationship. “It’s about giving and taking power,” he exclaims, underlining the narrative’s central theme.
Kidman won the best actress award for her role in Babygirl at Venice Film Festival 2024 after the movie premiered at the fest on August 30. Director Halina Reijn accepted the award on Kidman’s behalf as the actress was unable to attend the event due to the recent passing of her mother.
Also starring Sophie Wilde, Babygirl is slated to release in US theatres on December 25.
