Ayali, Custody, Jailer, Thankam, Tanuja: New trailers and teasers from South

Here’s a quick recap of the week that was for the Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam film industries

Following the trailer launch of Shine Tom Chacko’s Boomerang and Samatha Ruth Prabhu’s Shakuntalam, the makers of other upcoming movies from the Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam film industries dropped new trailers and teasers last week. Here’s a look at some of them.

Ayali (Tamil)

Zee5 released the official trailer of its upcoming Tamil-language social drama series Ayali. Written and directed by Muthu Kumar, the series stars Abi Nakshatra, Anumol, Madhan, Linga, Singampuli, TSR -Dharmaraj, Lovelyn, Gayathri Thara, Pragadheeswaran, Jenson, Rajamani Melodi, Goutham, Reshmi, Muthupandi and Lakshmi Priya. The two-minute-37-second-long trailer shows a village girl’s struggles against age-old customs and superstitions. The scene is set in a village where girls are married off immediately after reaching puberty to appease the local deity. The synopsis read, “Young Tamizhselvi’s quest towards her dream of becoming a doctor, defying the feared age-old customs and traditions which inadvertently suppressed women in the village of Veerappannai.”

Ayali will be streaming on Zee5 from January 26.

Custody (Telugu)

The makers of Telugu star Naga Chaitanya’s upcoming film Custody have unveiled the first character poster of its female lead Krithi Shetty. It is a bilingual project, which will be shot simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil.

In the poster, we see Naga Chaitanya holding up against several police officials who are pointing their guns at him. Directed by Venkat Prabhu, the film also stars Arvind Swamy in a prominent role.

Custody is slated to arrive in the cinemas on May 12.

Thankam (Malayalam)

The official trailer of Bhavana Studios’s Malayalam-language film Thankam has been released. Directed by Saheed Arafath and penned by celebrated writer Syam Pushkaran, the film stars Biju Menon, Vineeth Sreenivasan and Aparna Balamurali.

The two-minute-31-second-long trailer starts with Vineeth Srinivasan’s character requesting someone on the phone for ‘two’ of something. Both Vineeth and Biju Menon’s characters are part of something sinister.

Thankam will arrive in cinemas on January 26.

Jailer (Tamil)

Sun Pictures has unveiled the first look of Tamannaah in superstar Rajinikanth’s upcoming Tamil-language action comedy film Jailer. The Plan A Plan B actress will play an important role in the film.

Written and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Kalanithi Maran of Sun Pictures, Jailer stars Rajinikanth and also features Shiva Rajkumar, Ramya Krishnan, Vasanth Ravi, Vinayakan and Yogi Babu.

In the pictures shared by the production house, Tamannaah is seen wearing a black top and the image is lit from the back. The makers have confirmed that Jailer will arrive in cinemas on April 14.

Tanuja (Kannada)

The upcoming Kannada-language social drama film Tanuja finally gets a release date. Directed by State award-winner Harish M. Hallai, the movie stars Sapta Paavoor in the lead role. Former Karnataka chief minister BS Yeduriyappa will also be seen in the film.

Based on a true story, the film depicts the journey of a farmer’s daughter as she strives to become a doctor. How she struggled to write the NEET exam during the pandemic-induced lockdown is shown in detail here.

Tanuja will hit the cinemas on February 3.
