The first film, which hit theatres on November 22, collected over USD 500 million at the global box office over the weekend. Its worldwide total collection is USD 525 million at present.

The upcoming film’s title has been inspired by a song in the Act 2 of the first film about how the Wicked Witch of the West (Ariana Grande) and Glinda the Good (Cynthia Erivo) have undergone a change in their natures because of their unusual friendship.

Adapted from Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz’s eponymous Broadway musical based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch, Wicked chronicles the events prior to Dorothy’s arrival in L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Alongside Erivo as Elphaba and Grande as Glinda the Good Witch, the cast of Wicked includes Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Ethan Slater as Boq, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible and Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard. Previously, the second part was slated to hit theatres on November 26, 2025.

Recently, Wicked has been nominated for best picture, best acting, best adapted screenplay, best cinematography, best hair and makeup and best visual effects at the 30th Critics' Choice Awards. Chu, Erivo and Grande have also been nominated for best director, best actress and best supporting actress, respectively.
