Sonu Nigam’s voice adds soul to Anil Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor’s complex father-son bond in the Animal song Papa Meri Jaan, dropped by the makers of the upcoming Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial on Tuesday.

The melodious number explores the complicated relationship between Anil and Ranbir’s characters against the backdrop of the latter’s craving for his father’s presence and involvement in his day to day life. It also depicts Ranbir’s transformation into a fiercely protective figure, shaped by the challenges of growing up in his father's absence.

Shared by T-Series on Tuesday, the three-minute-4-second-long music video begins with a teenage, school uniform-clad Ranbir’s character rushing home on his birthday to see his father only to not find him there. An eerie whistling sound plays in the background as he tries to search for him. It then cuts to a scene where his mother explains to Anil how much his son craves for his love and support.

“He was even ready to change his name to Balbir Singh II. He said, ‘If George II, Henry VIII can exist, why can’t there be a Balbir Singh II?’” she says as Anil stares at her.

Their relationship dynamics don’t change even after Ranbir’s character grows up into an adult.

Poignant scenes of a young Ranbir distributing sweets among his classmates on his birthday while dealing with his complicated relationship with his father are brought to life through Sonu Nigam’s soulful voice. The title of the song Papa Meri Jaan hints at the obsessive love Ranbir has for his father, following a traumatic childhood with the latter’s absence yet getting frequent corporal punishments from him.

Penned by Raj Shekhar, Papa Meri Jaan is composed by Harshavardhan Rameshwar. The soul-stirring violin tune in the song is played by Sandilya Pisapati and the frequent whistling tunes are performed by Davy Suresh Kumar.

Co-produced by T-Series and Cine1 Studios, Animal was previously slated to release in theatres in September. But to avoid a clash with the release of Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan, its premiere was rescheduled. The film, which also stars Rashmika Mandanna, Bobby Deol and Tripti Dimri, is now set to hit theatres on December 1.
