“Excited and humbled to be sharing notes and being directed by Bill who has an impeccable body of work. Afghan Dreamers is a very important story to be told and I’m happy to be part of its cinematic retelling,” the 36-year-old actor said.

Bill has won Academy awards for two short films — You Don’t Have to Die and Twin Towers.

Afghan Dreamers is based on a programme that was started by Afghan tech entrepreneur Roya Mahboob in 2017 as a way to help young women develop their skills in the field of science and technology. The film throws light on the volatile situation in the country as young girls struggle to navigate through challenges posed by patriarchy.

The story tells the tale of a team of young Afghan girls who travelled across the globe to participate in competitions and garnered global media attention. The role of Roya will be essayed by The Bold Type actress Nikohl Boosheri.

Afghan Dreamers is being jointly produced by Laura Overdeck, Samudrika Arora and Bill Guttentag.

Ali, known for playing Guddu in popular Amazon Prime Video series Mirzapur, has acted in several English films like Furious 7, Victoria & Abdul and Death on the Nile. He has also been roped in to play one of the leads alongside Gerard Butler in the action film Kandahar, set to release in 2023.
