Karan Johar is a foodie and would like to gorge on chocolates, cakes and sweets if calories aren’t an issue. The director-producer is a part of digital films for KFC India’s new product, KFC Popcorn Nachos, in collaboration with Doritos. A quick food chat with the director of Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani.

How big are you on fast food?

If films are my first love, then food is my second! Over the last couple of years, I have been following a balanced nutritious diet, but that doesn’t mean I don’t get to indulge in things I love. Occasionally, I treat myself to a good bowl of ice cream, Indian desserts and some fried chicken. And when it comes to fried chicken, what better than KFC?!

What’s your favourite fast food apart from KFC?

I’m a big foodie, and being a Punjabi at heart, I never leave a chance to feast on rajma chawal and aloo paratha.

What did you think of the taste of KFC Popcorn Nachos?

What could be better than something which brings together my two loves in life — drama and food?! I never thought anything could top the emotions and drama of my films. But when I took the first bite of the crunchy KFC Popcorn Nachos, I was transported to another world! The all-new offering by KFC is packed with twists — juicy yet crispy and perfectly sauced, and it just made me realise that ‘ye snack nahi, drama hai!’

What’s the one item that’s a hit at your parties?

I love hosting parties and having people over. The last big party I hosted was my 50th birthday bash. It was a gala celebration, and my closest friends from the industry joined in. Having loads of fun, enjoying delicious food, clicking lots of pictures (and selfies!), and lots of chatter and drama is the highlight of my parties!

If calories weren’t an issue, what can you eat every day?

Oh, that’s a very long list then! But yes, if I could, I would love to eat desserts every day. Chocolates, cakes, sweets, especially Indian sweets like barfi, kaaju katli... have my heart. I’m also a big fan of Sindhi cuisine and would love to feast on my favourite items like Sai Bhaji, Sindhi Mutton, Aloo Tuk… Well, like I said, the list goes on!

Who is the biggest foodie among all the actors you have worked with?

If calories didn’t count, I think every actor would eat their heart out! But I know for a fact the Kapoors are big foodies. They take their food very seriously, and absolutely relish it. Whether it is Lolo (Karisma Kapoor), Bebo (Kareena Kapoor Khan), Ranbir (Kapoor), or now the newest addition to the family, Alia (Bhatt).

Who is the best cook?

For my 50th birthday bash, I worked with chef Harsha Kilachand and Marut Sikka to cook up a memorable meal for me and my guests. And it was amazing! So definitely they are among the best! Oh, and, my son Yash, who has a new-found interest in cooking! I love tasting everything he experiments with.

Among your friends, who is a fast food lover?

From my most recent experience, I feel Sara (Ali Khan) shares the same love for food that I do. We were trying to get into this restaurant in London, but we were so hungry we straight up went to KFC and gorged on some fried chicken!
