Lost for 34 years, a Queen track has been unearthed and released. Called Face It Alone, it will also form a part of the Queen: The Miracle Collector’s Edition that will be released very soon.

The song is dripping with drama as it explores themes such as the inevitable and loneliness, unfolding to funeral drum beats.

The Miracle was released in 1989, and the album featured the hit single I Want It All. Mercury had already been diagnosed with HIV two years earlier but when the album was released, he had not made the news public. He died two years later in 1991, aged 45.

Mercury’s voice takes on the scale of a stadium performance as he makes the song appear autobiographical. Mercury’s presence is hard to fault.

Unlike other bands, Queen didn’t record a huge selection of songs for any album and then picked a handful. In other words, they have released almost all the tracks that have been recorded. In fact, they managed to put out one posthumous album, 1995’s Made in Heaven, that involved old outtakes. Two more outtakes were added to a compilation called Queen Forever in 2014. The deluxe reissues of the 14 studio albums Queen recorded with Mercury managed to put out two unheard tracks between them.

“We did find a little gem from Freddie, that we’d kind of forgotten about,” Queen drummer Roger Taylor said about the unearthed track in June.

Face It Alone was recorded during The Miracle sessions in London and Switzerland. And Mercury seems to know what was around the bend. He repeats the refrain: “In the end / You have to face it all alone.”

Group member Brian May has said: “I’m happy that our team were able to find this track. After all these years, it’s great to hear all four of us — yes, Deacy [John Deacon] is there too — working in the studio on a great song idea which never quite got completed… until now.”
