BYD is looking to sell 1,5000 units of the SUV by 2023, said Sanjay Gopalakrishnan, senior vice president of electric passenger vehicles of BYD India, at the launch on Tuesday.

The Chinese company recently overtook Tesla in sales and has till September cumulatively sold over 2.6 million units of what it calls its ‘new energy vehicles’ globally while in September alone it sold 200,973 units.

The company’s main markets are China, parts of Europe, and countries in Latin America, Singapore, Nepal, and India.

BYD’s first passenger EV in India was the E6, an MPV that it sold to fleet operators at a retail price starting from Rs 29.15 lakh in November 2021.

“We sold 550 units of E6 till date but they were mainly for B2B,” said Gopalakrishnan.

The Shenzen-based auto and battery manufacturer entered the Indian market in March 2007 with its electric bus which has sold 800 units.

“We have sold our buses to various state transport units (STUs) across India. In 2019, we launched Lithium-Ion forklifts to replace the lead acid and diesel forklifts prevalent in the industry. The company so far has delivered 200 such units,” said the SVP.
