Two Americans who travelled to Mexico for tummy tuck surgery have been found dead after being abducted by drug gang members in what officials believe was a case of mistaken identity.
Two others survived the attack and were being escorted out of the country under armed guard , as Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Mexico’s President, said one suspect was in custody.
The White House said on Tuesday night that the incident was “unacceptable” and it would be working closely with the Mexican authorities.
The group of four friends crossed the border at Texas in a white mini-van last Friday and had just reached Matamoros in the state of Tamaulipas when they came under fire.
US citizens had already been warned not to travel through the area.
A video posted on social media showed men with assault rifles load the four people into the back of a white pick-up truck in broad daylight.
