The Indian business community in Britain is in a state of shock after Vivek Chadha, a 33-year-old wealthy hotelier who donated generously to good causes, passed away suddenly on Sunday.
When the Labour peer Meghnad Desai began fundraising in 2014 for a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Parliament Square, Chadha was almost the first to make a donation, sending in a cheque for £100,000.
He also supported a charity ball in June 2017 after which Virat Kohli posted a picture of himself with Chadha and the message: “Thanks to Vivek Chadha for the support at our Charity Ball last night. Great to meet you!”
Only eight weeks ago, Chadha and his 29-year-old bride, Stuttee, had a Sikh wedding followed by a glamorous reception at the five-star JW Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel, on London’s Park Lane.
Stuttee, who is being comforted by her in-laws, Gursharan, 61 and Jasbir, 58, at their home in Iver, Berkshire, told the Mail: “There are no words to describe what has happened. I’m in shock and still trying to make sense of it. We only got married eight weeks ago and it was beautiful. Now I’m having to deal with the loss of the love of my life. I’m stunned and heartbroken.”
Jasbir said: “We are in total shock and it’s too early for us to say anything about Vivek and his achievements. There will come a time when we will pay tribute to him but at the moment, it’s too early for us. We are in too much pain.”
Friends said this is a double tragedy for the family. Not so long ago, Chadha’s sister’s daughter died in a collision with a lorry during a cycling family holiday in South America.
Reports said that Chadha collapsed at a central London address with one source suggesting he may have suffered a heart attack.
Chadha was a Conservative party supporter, who attended Tory functions and posted photographs of himself with former Prime Ministers, David Cameron and Theresa May.
After graduating with a degree in civil engineering in 2010, he founded the Nine Group with his father in 2012. This includes the four star London 02 Arena and Holiday Inn franchises.
The firm also owns a pub — the Halt & Pull in Horley, Surrey — and recently struck a franchising deal with restaurant chain Pizza Hut.
The group now runs 18 hotels as having commercial and residential investments across the country. It employs more than 800 people.
In 2017, Chadha won the “Rising Star” award at the Young Entrepreneur of the Year prizes in recognition of his work.
