At least 20 people were killed and more than two dozen injured after a bus ferrying pilgrims to the holy city of Mecca crashed with a bridge, overturned and burst into flames in the southwestern province of Asir in Saudi Arabia on Monday.
The tragedy comes during the first week of Ramadan, which is a busy time for umrah pilgrims, as reported by ndtv.com. According to the state-affiliated Al-Ekhbariya channel, the total number of injuries is approximately 29 and the death toll has surpassed 20.
Various media reports have attributed the cause of the tragedy to “car problems” and brake issues the bus might have faced leading to the accident.
Transportation and logistics become a serious challenge in Saudi Arabia during Hajj as roads turn chaotic with traffic jams. The issue comes to light as millions of Muslims are supposed to embark on the annual hajj pilgrimage in a few months.
In October 2019 in a similar incident, some 35 foreign nationals died and four others were injured in a bus accident near Medina.
However, pilgrimages are an essential component of a flourishing tourism sector that Saudi Arabia hopes will help reduce the national economy’s dependence on fossil fuels.
