Pakistan’s national security adviser Moeed Yusuf on Tuesday ruled out travelling to India later this month to participate in the meeting on Afghanistan called by his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval. The other countries invited are China, Russia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

When asked by the media in Pakistan if he will be travelling to India for the NSA-level discussion on Afghanistan, Yusuf said: “I am not going to India for (the) conference. A spoiler cannot try to become a peace-maker.’’

The in-person conference is scheduled for November 10. India has invited key stakeholders in Afghanistan for the meeting to find a way to address the humanitarian crisis in the war-ravaged country as also address the evolving security situation and the threats it poses to the neighbourhood.

Pakistan views the meeting called by India as an attempt by New Delhi to find “some relevance’’ in Afghanistan. At last week’s weekly briefing, Pakistan’s foreign ministry spokesperson Asim Iftikhar said various other regional mechanisms and processes are in place, citing the one initiated by Islamabad in September, the Moscow format and one held in Iran last week.

Of the three meetings cited by Pakistan, India was invited only to the Moscow format where it had its first official engagement with the Taliban government. Besides participating in the Moscow format discussions where Taliban representatives were present, Indian officials also had a bilateral engagement with them in Moscow.
