After arriving in Taipei despite China's 'warnings', US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the visit to Taiwan honours America’s unwavering commitment to supporting the island’s vibrant democracy, reports ndtv.com

“Our delegation’s visit to Taiwan honors America’s unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan’s vibrant Democracy," Nancy Pelosi said in a statement.

“Our discussions with the Taiwan leadership will focus on reaffirming our support for our partner and on promoting our shared interests, including advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific region."

Nancy Pelosi said America’s solidarity with the 23 million people of Taiwan is more important today than ever, as the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy.

“Our visit is one of several Congressional delegations to Taiwan and it in no way contradicts longstanding United States policy, guided by the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, U.S.-China Joint Communiques and the Six Assurances," the statement said.

"The United States continues to oppose unilateral efforts to change the status quo," the statement added.

China has condemned Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan and said her trip to the island violates the “one China” principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US communiqués.

"China will definitely take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity in response to the US Speaker’s visit. All the consequences must be borne by the US and the “Taiwan independence” separatist forces,” said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
