Employees of microblogging platform Twitter, including those in India, were left checking their mailboxes for the dreaded pink slip as billionaire Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, moves with his plans to reshape the company.

A PTI report said Twitter has fired the majority of its over 200 employees in India.

Sources said the layoffs were across engineering, sales and marketing and communications teams.

Several employees of Twitter across different geographies went on social mediasuch as Twitter and LinkedIn to inform that they were part of the layoff.

“Just got laid off. It was an absolute honour, the greatest privilege ever to be part of this team, this culture,” tweetedYash Agarwal, who was engaged in the public policy department. However, there is no clarity yet on the severance package to be paid to employees laid off in India.

The entire marketing and communications department in India has been sacked, the sources said.

“Layoff has started. Some of my colleagues have received an email notification regarding this,” a Twitter India employee told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Another source said the layoffs have affected a “significant chunk” of the India team.

Twitter India did not respond to email queries.

There has been no official comment from Twitter and the company has prohibited its staff from discussing confidential information.

Musk has begun his innings at Twitter by firing CEO Parag Agrawal as well as a few other top executives.

“In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through a difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday,” a Twittermemo to its staff said. Services were also temporarily disrupted on Friday morning.
