President Joe Biden on Monday said he was “planning on” seeking re-election next year but was not ready to launch his campaign yet.
Biden’s 2024 plans have for months been the subject of speculation, with top aides quietly making plans to build out a campaign. But the President has yet to make a final decision.
At the White House Easter egg roll, Al Roker of NBC News asked Biden if he planned on being in the White House after 2024.
“I’m planning on running, Al,” Biden said. “But we’re not prepared to announce it yet.”
The White House has long said Biden “intends to run” but has not revealed a timeline to start a campaign. A delayed announcement would not be out of character for Biden, who waited to begin his 2020 campaign until April 2019 — well after other major candidates entered the race.
President Barack Obama began his 2012 re-election campaign in April 2011. By then he had selected Charlotte, North Carolina, to host the 2012 Democratic National Convention and had announced his campaign headquarters would again be in Chicago.
Biden has made neither type of announcement.
