India on Thursday abstained from a United Nations General Assembly resolution that demanded Russia immediately end its aggression against Ukraine and ensure the safety and security of nuclear facilities in the war-ravaged country.
India was among 60 countries which abstained. Nine countries voted against the resolution, which was carried with 99 votes.
The resolution comes at a time when Russia has stepped up its aggression on Ukraine and in a week Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a "successful annual summit" with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow even as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed disappointment.
Thursday’s resolution demanded that Russia urgently withdraw its military and other unauthorised personnel from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and immediately return the plant to the full control of Ukraine.
