King Charles has decided that it is not worth upsetting India by getting his wife to wear the Kohinoor diamond for their joint coronation in Westminster Abbey on May 6.

Instead of the Kohinoor, whose return has been sought by India, Camilla will be given Queen Mary’s Crown when she is upgraded from “Queen Consort” to “Her Majesty the Queen”. Born Camilla Shand, she became Camilla Parker Bowles after her first marriage to an army officer and the Duchess of Cornwall after her second to Prince Charles.

In a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II, some of her diamonds will be added to Queen Mary’s Crown, which has been removed from display in the Tower of London for adjustments to suit Camilla. There were concerns that there would be a diplomatic row with India if the Kohinoor had been used.

It glittered and dazzled onlookers during the coronation of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1937. It was also displayed during her funeral in2002. Charles chose St Valentine’s day to announce that his “Mehbooba”, as he likes to call his wife in Indian company, will be given Queen Mary’s Crown. This was made by Garrard & Co for Mary of Teck, wife of George V, for their coronation in 1911. Charles, an environmentalist, added that its re-use was in the “interests of sustainability and efficiency”.
