British actor Ian Holm, best known for his roles in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Chariots of Fire, has died aged 88, the Guardian newspaper said on Friday.
The actor, who received an Oscar nomination for his performance in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire, had died from a Parkinson’s related illness, the paper said.
Holm began his career on stage working as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company. His role as an athletics coach in Chariots of Fire won him a Bafta and an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actor, while he played Bilbo Baggins in two of The Lord of the Rings films.
