Mayor Gautam Deb on Friday said the new board at the Siliguri Municipal Corporation would make the city a “zero garbage” one.
He made the announcement after holding the first meeting of the MMICs (member, mayor in council ) at the SMC.
“We will start night services to collect garbage from the main roads of the city. We will also introduce a comprehensive solid waste management in 25 wards and around 700 employees would be engaged. The state urban development agency will assist us,” he said.
Sources said the mayor and the MMICs would have a meeting with Biplab Mitra, the state minister for agriculture marketing, to discuss reconstruction of the regulated market.
Located at the northern end of Siliguri at Champasari, it is the largest wholesale market of vegetables, fruits and fish in the region.
“Across the city, LED lights would be installed on streets and a survey is in progress. Also, another survey is going on to identify the drains, roads and culverts which need repairs,” said sources.
