Youth kills uncle after ‘rebuke for theft’

A 55-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his nephew at a village in Malda district on Wednesday late evening after he caught the latter stealing money and rebuked the youth.

Local sources said Taz Mohammed, a trader in Mahendrapur area that is under Harishchandrapur police station of the district, found Sekel Ali, his nephew, stealing around Rs 10,000 from his cash box. He scolded Ali, who is suspected to be a drug abuser, and asked him to leave.

An agitated Ali reportedly attacked Taz with a bamboo stick later. Taz, who was at a tea stall then, collapsed on the spot. Ali fled. Taz was rushed to a local hospital by standers where doctors pronounced him dead. Police are in search of Ali.

Fatal mishap
Kalyani Malodas, a 45-year-old woman of Matigara on the outskirts of Siliguri, was mowed down by a truck on Thursday.

Police sources said the truck, laden with sand, was moving in reverse gear when the driver lost control. The woman was standing nearby. She got crushed under the wheels and died on the spot.
Angry bystanders damaged the vehicle. The driver managed to flee. A team from Matigara police station reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

The truck has been seized. Police are in search of the driver.
