Acting on a tip-off, troops of the 57th battalion of the BSF posted at the India-Bangladesh border in South Dinajpur seized 12 kilos of cannabis from a resident of the district on Saturday night.

Sources said BSF personnel apprehended Liton Das, 33, from Chakbanshi village under Patiram police station.

He was trying to smuggle the cannabis, the cost of which is around Rs 1 lakh, to Bangladesh, sources alleged.

Later, Das was handed over to the local police.

The BSF also carried out anti-smuggling drives in areas under the north Bengal frontier and seized cattle and cough syrup bottles from near the border. Those were kept in bordering villages and meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh, BSF sources said.

In the recent past, the BSF found narcotics and Yaba tablets (a stimulant containing methamphetamine and caffeine) inside the cavities of the pipes of bicycles and motorbikes from near the border.
